Ogiyy
is a young producer originally from Kyoto, but now based in Tokyo. With
his latest release for French label Cascade Records, he takes us back
to the funk and R&B of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s on an album
appropriately titled Nostalgia.
Now, this is hardly new material
for hip hop producers to explore, but this area has been explored a lot
of the years because it’s a gold mine of amazing source material. Much
of Nostalgia is something of an electro-boogie/Quiet Storm hybrid, with
some really amazing baby-making beats. This is evident by titles like
“Move Ya Body,” “Hot 4 U,” “Stay With Me,” and “Jouis Du Jour.” This is
the spot for your sexy summer jams. Ogiyy does an excellent job of
incorporating some really great samples, but then reinventing them into
something all his own. He has a great feel for a groove, and has a lot
of patience to allow the songs to unfold at a natural pace, without
letting them sound slow and drawn out. The real key to the album,
though, is “Movie On,” which shakes up the slower, intimate tone of the
majority of the album with an infectious disco groove that is impossible
to ignore. Seriously, if you’re looking for something to get people on
the dance floor during the dog days of summer, this is your jam. This is
the only song, though, on the album that breaks the mold, so it’s hard
to tell just what sort of range Ogiyy has as a producer, or what his
overall sound might be. What we do know, though, is that Ogiyy is
excellent at this instrumental R&B/funk/hip hop sound, and Nostalgia
is really sexy and enjoyable.
Ogiyy is still a young man, and
who knows where his career will head. What we do know is that he can
make some really intimate grooves and he can really bring the funk.
Nostalgia is an excellent soundtrack for this summer.
